You are being invited to volunteer to participate in a research study. Research studies include only people who voluntarily choose to take part. This summary explains information about this research. You are urged to ask questions about anything that is unclear to you.
- The purpose of this study is to investigate the frequency of surgeons’ occupational exposure to two blood-borne viruses, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), and to elicit surgeons’ suggestions of ways to reduce the risk of exposure.
- Participation in this research involves the completion of a brief, anonymous survey.
- Completion of the survey should take approximately 10 minutes of your time to complete.
- The risk of participation in this study is minimal. The perceived risk is the loss of confidentiality, but precautions are being taken to prevent that from happening.
- Should you decide to participate, the provided link below connects you to the survey through the Penn State Hershey Medical Center Research Electronic Data Capture System, (REDCap). REDCap insures there is no link between the participants and the surveys received. All de-identified data will be stored on this secure, encrypted server accessible only by the principal investigator on this project.
- You will not benefit from taking part in this research study. However, the results of this research may help to guide health policy and the development of programs to improve the protection of surgeons from exposure to blood-borne viruses and inadvertent exposure to patients.
- Participants will not be compensated for participation in this study.
- This study is not funded and the investigators have no financial relationships to this study.

You do not have to participate in this research. Taking part in the research study is voluntary. Your decision to decline or to participate in the research will not result in any penalty or loss of benefits to which you are entitled.
Your completion of the survey implies your voluntary consent to participate in the research.
IMPORTANT:
- Please read carefully before you start the survey. This survey is to study Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) exposure among surgeons.
- Please complete the survey only if you are a surgeon and actively perform surgery on a regular basis.
You have selected an option that triggers this survey to end right now.
To save your responses and end the survey, click the 'End Survey' button below. If you have selected the wrong option by accident and/or wish to return to the survey, click the 'Return and Edit Response' button.
