Agriculture is one of the most hazardous and stressful occupations, leading to higher rates of physical and mental health challenges among farmers and farm workers. Besides impacting quality of life, health and safety challenges have direct repercussions on the farm operation including how much work can get done and its economic viability.

To better support the well-being and safety of agricultural communities, the goal of this survey is to better understand your lived realities with health and safety on the farm and to learn about solutions you are interested in. We will use the valuable insights that you share to inform our future Penn State Extension offerings. We will also use your valuable insights to inform policymakers, farm organizations, and service providers about the agricultural sector's safety and well-being and what they could do to support it. The information from you and other farmers will be shared anonymously.

Today, we are asking you to agree to participate in the survey. Here is the practical information to help you decide if you want to participate in this research study.

  • The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete. The survey asks questions about health and safety background and practices on the farm, solutions that would make it easier to keep everyone safe and healthy, and background information about your farm and family.
  • At the end of the survey, you will have the option to provide your contact information to enter a drawing for a free farm safety item. You are not required to provide your contact information to participate in the study.
  • Your participation is voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time. You may also skip any question you do not want to answer.
  • All information will be kept confidential. No information that personally identifies you will ever be released.
